Course Overview

The MSAC Institute of Training is a leader in sport and recreation management, delivering nationally accredited training courses. Our Personal Trainer course is in the unique position of being delivered in one of Melbourne's largest and most diverse leisure facilities making up the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC). Classes are held using the facilities and equipment of one of the leading sport and recreation facilities in Australia.

The Personal Trainer course will train you to be “work ready” to enter the exciting Australian Fitness Industry. Students receive 2 certificates during each 4 month course. Firstly, the Certificate III in Fitness, which will register you to work as a Fitness Instructor. Next, the Certificate IV in Fitness will register you to work as a Personal Trainer.

Our Fitness courses have been developed in consultation with industry experts and workplace trainers who are amongst the best in Australia. Their backgrounds include Physical Education, Sport, Recreation & Exercise Physiology.

Students graduate with expertise as a Fitness Instructor, Personal Trainer and Circuit Training Instructor.  Additionally, you will gain practical marketing skills and communicate with Allied Health Practitioners to help promote your business.  

Certificate III is the pre requisite for certificate IV.

Pre-requisites and Credit Transfer

Candidates need to be at least 17 years of age to enroll in the Certificates III & IV in Fitness. To be successful in this course you need to have an interest in health and fitness and be an active participant in fitness activities such as group exercise classes, resistance training and cardiovascular training- however, you are not required to be super fit!

Access to a computer, internet, email account, and an understanding of English to school year 10 level is recommended. Credit transfer is available if you already have a valid Level 2 First Aid certificate and provide a certified copy. Students who do not have their Level 2 First Aid receive this certificate as part of their course only if they attend one of the MSAC Institute of Training's courses.

Updates of First Aid and CPR are not included. If you have completed a Certificate III or IV in Community Recreation or Sport and Recreation you can apply for credit transfer for a number of units and reduce the duration of the course.

Delivery Strategy and Assessment

The full Personal Trainer course consists of several components:

  • Certificate III and IV in Fitness (III is the pre requisite for IV)
  • Pre class study tasks using course notes, the text book provided and the internet.
  • 24 Activity Sessions: 3 hours each of course content delivery and compulsory practical assessment tasks in an engaging environment, utilizing classroom and the MSAC Health & Wellness centre (gym).
  • Work Experience: 20 hours for each Certificate level- organised by the student and approved by MIT.

Cost: $1,900 per Certificate level. A certificated copy of Certificate III is required to enroll in Certificate IV.

This course is delivered with Victorian and Commonwealth Government funding (eligibility checks apply).

The Certificate IV in Fitness will equip you with comprehensive skills and knowledge to work in the Fitness Industry. Students who complete the Certificate IV in Fitness will be prepared for careers in physical fitness and rehabilitation as well as being qualified to meet the needs of older adults.

Career opportunities include working independently as a Personal Trainer, under the guidance of Allied Heath practitioners relating to exercise rehabilitation, nutrition and exercise for fat loss and counselling for motivation. You will also be prepared to work with difficult or challenging clients that require the use of advanced technical planning and leadership skills. Students can register to work as Fitness & Circuit Training Instructors as soon as they have completed Certificate III.
