Pool Lifeguard Course
Course Overview
The Pool Lifeguard program provides participants with the skills and knowledge required to supervise swimming pool users. Based at Sports House and the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC), the program includes training and assessment of Lifeguarding skills and procedures including pool surveillance, aquatic emergency care and basic first aid, emergency management, introductory pool operations, oxygen resuscitation and aquatic spinal injury management.
Candidates who successfully complete this program will be accredited with the Life Saving Victoria (LSV) Pool Lifeguard Award. The program is linked to competency standards in the Community Recreation Training package and candidates will also receive a Statement of Attainment for the following units:
SRCAQU003B Respond to an aquatic emergency using basic water rescue techniques
SRCAQU006B Supervise clients at an aquatic facility or environment
SRCAQU007B Respond to an aquatic emergency using advanced water rescue techniques
Prerequisites
Candidates must be 16 years of age and will be asked to demonstrate current competency in the following areas:
- Level 2 Senior First Aid qualification
- basic spinal management techniques
- ability to swim 200 metres
- ability to recover a casualty from deep water
Update Courses: Pool Lifeguard and CPR
Candidates must renew their Pool Lifeguard Certificate and CPR qualifications annually to continue working in the industry. The MSAC Institute of Training delivers a series of update courses on a regular basis each year. Please contact us for more information.
